Dog History

The history of the Austrian Black & Tan Hound is murky at best. Some breed aficionados believe they are an old hound descended from early Celtic hound dogs, however no confirmation of this has been discovered to yet. Another idea is that they are ancestors of the dogs produced over 1,000 years ago by the monks of St. Hubert's abbey. A last, and perhaps most plausible, idea is that the Austrian Black & Tan Hound is the consequence of centuries of breeding a number of neighbouring German breeds including the German Pinscher and the Hanover Hound.

Although the breed was first documented in 1884, it is largely accepted that it has been around for at least a few hundred years. They would have been mated with similar dogs in the area prior to this, but this practise has fallen out of favour after their breed standard was published.
