Alopekis is a small Greek fox-like dog that pierces its ears, has a sickle-shaped tail, and wears a sleek short coat. It is not recognized as a breed by any major kennel club. The breed's head is wedge-shaped, wide, with a slightly dome-shaped skull and large brain space. The muzzle is also wedge-shaped, with a horizontal top line that tapers evenly across the nose. The eye color is the same as the color of the coat.

History

The dog was found in the Serres region of Greece and dates back to 1922. Alopekis is thought to be derived from a type of small dog that is common on the Balkan Peninsula, but some claim it is a descendant of the Eastern Pye dog. The number of alopekis has been endangered over the last half-century, and in some areas, the situation has been exacerbated by mass sterilization of dogs to reduce the number of stray dogs, but a minority in Northern Greece still surviving in the small population. Recently, efforts have been made to identify surviving populations and save species.

Health and Care

• They do not have any breed-specific health problems. This allows you to live a long and healthy life and is ideal for families who want to raise a dog  with their children.

Behavior

• Alopekis is suitable for urban and rural life, small apartments, and farms. A very adaptable dog.
• They can be a bit aggressive against small rodents and exotic pets, but they do well with most people, children, and animals. This breed is known to be energetic, playful, and affectionate, around children, and also good with families.
• This breed is also friendly with other pets who like to play. Retrievers and alopekis, for example, are known to work very well.
